Quotes cannot be "dropped" into a paper. All quotes need to be introduced and require lead-ins. See the sample essay paragraph below:

In her book Racism 101, Giovanni writes, "We have a world to conquer...one person at a time...starting with ourselves" (111). Giovanni insists her generation has an obligation to pass on to the young what experiences they have been through. She says, "They have a responsibility to know we did not just wake up, clap three times and make changes" (Washington 67). Giovanni makes it her mission to not only teach her Virginia Tech students skills in creative writing, but to influence them as well. Her children's books are her opportunity to get her message across to young people who might need that guidance in their lives. In an interview, Giovanni comments on how difficult it is to write children's books, despite the typical belief that such a task is easy. She says, "It's a discipline as hard as poetry. You're teaching to read and reaching to children" (Bonner). Giovanni's numerous children's books, and devotion to today's youth, allow her to do just that - reach out to children.
